Remediating toxic ion contamination is crucial for protecting human health and the environment. This study aimed to provide a powerful strategy for effectively utilizing bone waste from the food production and preparation industries for removal of toxic ions. Here, we show that immersing pig bone in NaHCO$$_{3}$$ solution produced a carbonated nanohydroxyapatites (C-NHAP). The C-NHAP exhibited high adsorptivity for Sr$$^{2+}$$, Cd$$^{2+}$$, Pb$$^{2+}$$, and Cu$$^{2+}$$. The strontium adsorptivity was about 250 and 4,500 times higher than that of normal bone and synthetic HAP, respectively. The C-NHAP is an eco-friendly, high-performance material that is simple to prepare and should be useful for tackling problems of food waste disposal and environmental pollution.

Thermochemical hydrogen production by the iodine-sulfur process decomposes water into hydrogen and oxygen by combining the chemical reactions of iodine and sulfur. Two types of acids are produced through the Bunsen reaction. To improve the performance of this reaction, ion-exchange membranes for the membrane Bunsen reaction should be developed. In the present study, a cation-exchange membrane was prepared by using a radiation-graft polymerization method. It was found that a divinylbenzene crosslinking procedure was very effective in reducing water permeation through the membrane, and the membrane Bunsen reaction was successfully carried out by using the developed crosslinked membrane. Therefore, the developed crosslinked membrane is a potential candidate for cation-exchange membranes for the membrane Bunsen reaction.

For evaluating the Pu partitioning behavior under the condition of high Pu concentration in the feed solution by the acid split method, the counter current experiment was carried out. The Pu content in the U/Pu product was 1.51 times higher than that in the feed solution. In the Pu partitioning section, Pu polymerization and third phase formation were observed, and the operation of centrifugal contactors was stable.

Effects of weak organic acids on the size distribution and size-dependent metal binding of humic substances as studied by flow field-flow fractionation

Yamashita, Yuji*; Saito, Takumi

Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, 3(4), p.3024 - 3029, 2015/12

Humic substances are natural organic matters with heterogeneity in the size distribution and composition of there functional groups. In this study, the effects of organic acid, which are often used as pH buffering agents, on the size of a humic substance and size-dependent binding of metal ions on the humic substance were investigated by flow-field flow fractionation (Fl-FFF). Comparing the three organic acids, Tris, MES, and MOPS, the size of purified Aldrich humic acid (PAHA) changed in the presence of Tris and MES, suggesting that the interaction with these organic acid modulated the molecular structure of PAHA; on the other hand, MOPS hardly affect the size of PAHA. Size-dependent binding of europium (Eu$$^{3+}$$) and uranium (UO$$_{2}$$$$^{2+}$$) were also studied by Fl-FFF in the presence of MOPS. The binding of these metal ions were not homogeneous with respect to the size of PAHA; they exhibited high affinity to PAHA fractions with 5 nm hydrodynamic diameter.

$$L_{3}$$-edge jump and shift on white-line of Pd interlayer for trilaminar neutron production target under H$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ irradiation

Ishiyama, Shintaro; Fujii, Ryo*; Nakamura, Masaru*; Imahori, Yoshio*

Journal of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, 8(9), p.870 - 875, 2014/09

Interlayer Pd for the Li/Pd/Cu neutron target for BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) was characterized after 0.1-5 keV H$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ irradiation by XAFS technique, and following conclusions were derived; (1) From the XAFS observation of white line of Pd, remarkable Pd $$L_{3}$$ Edge jump was found in 1.1-3 times higher than before irradiation in low irradiation fluence. (2) This fact indicates increase of hole density in Pd 4d-band, whereas no change was observed for XASF spectra of Ag sample under the same irradiation conditions. (3) Remarkable Pd $$L_{3}$$ Edge shift of 0.12-0.66 eV was also found with increase of H$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ irradiation energy in low fluence, and drastically decreased after peak in high irradiation energy and fluence.(4)Implanted protons deposited in Pd as negative under the balance of electron population enhanced by proton irradiation and charge transfer.
